Richard has the wind in his sails
Richard McCracken, who lives in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland, has been in touch to tell me just how economical his 13-amp AGA is - thanks to the cooker's inherent ability to store heat and the wonders of green energy.
Richard and his wife, Joanne, installed their 13-amp black AGA when they renovated their kitchen in 2006. Acutely aware of environmental issues, the couple decided to produce their own electricity using a wind turbine, which they would use to power the AGA.
"In nearly three years," says Richard, "we have spent less than £100 in total on electricity and our AGA has never been turned off. It has revolutionised the way my wife cooks, with stews going on at lunchtime to simmer all afternoon and AGA toasties for the kids, baked potatoes, cakes and buns all being house specialities."
Richard adds that, as well as cooking all the family meals, the AGA also dries clothes, heats the house, rescues sick lambs in the spring and keeps Rosie the dog warm.
