You should ask your engineer about fitting a "Watchman" transmitter to the tank. They cost around £70 and you plug the receiver, which displays the quantity of oil you have, into a normal electric socket. I fitted one myself in October and it really does take the worry out of running on oil. I think I bought it from Boilerjuice.
