It makes sense to ensure you get a good night's sleep
I find it really difficult to get to sleep. What changes should I make to my bedroom that will help me drop off?
Ideally, you should have no electrical equipment in your bedroom. For many people that means moving the TV out. If you really can't bear to, then at least ensure it's switched off at the wall at least half an hour before you decide to go to sleep.
Don't have your mobile in the bedroom. Even charging it while you sleep can cause problems.
Spraying your bed with a lavender linen spray can help you drift off too.
Heavy curtains are a good idea if you like to go to bed before it gets dark and they can also help if you wake early during the summer months.
We're about to redecorate our bedroom, but are unsure what colour to paint it. Are there colours we should avoid and what shade is best for a cosy, romantic feel?
Very bright yellows and reds should be avoided in the bedroom.
Pale yellows, blues, pinks and greens are all good for bedrooms, as are dark greys and browns.
It works well to choose one main colour and another two to use for accessories. Fired Earth has a great selection of paints.
I want my bedroom to feel really luxurious. What can I do?
Dark, jewel-like colours can lend an opulent feel to a room - go for deep reds and greens - and think about a slightly shiny fabric for a huge throw on the bed.
A chandelier can add a feel of luxury and glamour and there's a vast range of very affordable styles available now.
If you prefer something more minimalist, then the bedrooms of boutique hotels are a good place to look for inspiration.
Wood flooring with a big sheepskin rug add this kind of feel to a room, as do walls painted in a dark shade of brown of grey.
What about the perfect sheets and pillow cases?
Cotton is the most practical and comfortable fabric for sheets.
The general rule is the higher the thread count the better the sheet. You have to be careful, though, to make sure you look for the thread count of single-ply, otherwise you'll end up with a much coarser feeling sheet.
Always touch the sheets before buying them, so you can get an idea of how they'll feel.
Antique linen sheets are a great buy - if you can find some without holes or warn patches. Look for them online, in markets and small antique shops.
Fashionistas swear by silk pillowcases, as apparently they save your face from wrinkles and can help prevent bad hair days.
What should I look for in a bed?
There's a saying that you should always invest wisely in your shoes and your bed. When you're not in one, you're in the other.
Sleeping in an uncomfortable bed is a miserable experience and is bad for your health, so choosing well is extremely important.
The National Sleep Council has launched an interactive online guide to buying the right bed.
