English style in the USA: with very British Aga

Iain and Sue's brick-built house, New Jersey USA

Originally from Dundee, Iain and his wife, Sue, moved to a Cape Cod brick-built house in Moorestown, New Jersey some years ago because "it reminded us of Britain".

Choosing  Aga

"We chose an Aga in our kitchen because we wanted that British feel and because of its iconic style. My wife loves using it and my daughters love making quesadillas.

"These are made using a flour tortilla, sprinkling it with cheese, placing chicken on top, applying a dollop of ketchup, closing it with another flour tortilla on top, placing the whole thing on the warm ring of the Aga and closing the lid. Minutes later superb, mouth-watering quesdillas can be consumed at your leisure. A dream for any hungry child.

4-oven Aga in claret

A British tradition: the Aga in Claret

"When we installed our Aga we had remodelled our kitchen. We literally gutted it and started again. We removed all the cabinets, re-did all the plumbing, re-laid out the kitchen, giving pride of place to our Aga. As we had chosen an Electric Aga it meant it could go literally anywhere in the room.

"We wanted to have a large enough kitchen living space that Sue could be working around the Aga and yet still be able to see our little girls. So we created a low-level wall between the kitchen and the family room. Now, when Sue leans against the Aga, she can see the girls playing. It's a little like having your own restaurant at home.

Enjoying  Aga

"Some of the things we really enjoy about our Aga include using the Aga pizza paddle or 'bread peal' to place pizzas on to the floor of the hot oven and then scooping them back out, sizzling hot and ready to be enjoyed. I also find the Aga the best thing for drying out my decanters - simply turn the ducks upside down to ensure they dry evenly all over.

Bastide  kitchen

Bastide kitchen furniture

Built to last: Bastide kitchen furniture

"We love the Bastide kitchen furniture - it works so well with our Aga and has a robust quality which means that we never have to worry about it with our young children.

"We have a small rectangular Bastide kitchen table with Louisianne chairs from Grange. We have two superb Domain leather sofas, which are really comfortable for tall people - the length of the seat provides great support for your legs - right up to your knees, which is pretty unusual. The leather is lovely and soft and it's just so easy to sit down on, but not quite so easy to get back up again! We also have the biggest-ever Domain leather sleigh bed."
