Redesigning a 1950s house: with Fired Earth

Designer home: the 1950s house in Alderley Edge

Heavily involved with an ongoing project, property developer Paul decided to ask Fired Earth to work with him on one of his new properties. He talked to Emma Hawcroft and the team at the store at Sycamore Farm, Knutsford and was impressed by their product knowledge and design flair.

Paul commissioned Emma to design three separate bathrooms - a kitchen floor and the colour schemes for a 1950s house in Alderley Edge. Emma was given a fixed budget to work with, but was still able to fit out all three bathrooms without any serious limitations.

The  brief

She says: "My brief was to create bathrooms that would appeal to a broad range of people and, although Paul had set a budget right at the beginning, he was still open to the styling ideas we had.

"I equipped the family bathroom, second bedroom, en suite bathroom and downstairs loo with everything you would expect to find in a property in such a prestigious location. I'm very pleased with the results."

Emma chose products which were timeless and broadly neutral in colour and tone. She wanted to create a feeling of fresh simplicity, enhancing space, but with a classic appeal.

The  designs

In one of the bathrooms the walls are covered in Antalya Travertine combined with Sicilian Mosaic and a pair of 'his and hers' Venetian marble bowls - simple, tasteful, practical.

Fired Earth Brasilia slate

Sleek and stylish: Fired Earth Brasilia slate in the kitchen

The dramatic black and white kitchen has a floor of Brasilia slate to make a stunning statement. This is used again very successfully on the floor of the main bathroom and combined with the wonderfully practical retro metro tiles.

Delighted

Paul is delighted with the results - in particular the subtle, clever colour scheme.

"I enjoyed working alongside the Fired Earth team at Sycamore Farm. The staff had the right attitude and were always very friendly while the store had plenty of inspiring products that I will keep in mind for future projects.

"Emma's design ability and technical knowledge were big factors in the decision to involve her in this project. My wife and I are big fans of Fired Earth products and are planning to work with Emma again when we renovate our own home!"
