Composting As we all become more aware of our environmental responsibilities, composting become ever more relevant and important. It’s easy, green and surprisingly enjoyable once you get started and Alan Shepherd, author of The Little Book of Compost (Collins, £5.99) has created a number of gourmet compost recipes that we can all cook up. Alan’s book is surprisingly amusing as well as informative and is a must-read for anyone who’s thinking of starting a compost heap.
Eat a really healthy breakfast At the risk of sounding like your mother, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. Without a decent breakfast, we’re all tempted to chomp on chocolate when we experience an energy slump. Breakfast shouldn’t be a chore. It should be something we really look forward to. In fact, by getting up a little earlier each day and eating something simple like boiled eggs or delicious cereal, we actually set ourselves up for a much more productive day.
Yoga Yoga is brilliant for physical and emotional wellbeing. Yoga has a holistic approach to the body, mind and spirit and is a great antidote to the stresses and strains of modern life. Those who practice yoga everyday report a drop in their stress levels. Visit bwy.org.uk for more information and to find local classes.
Volunteer Many people find volunteering really rewarding. There are many different organisations looking for volunteers to do a huge variety of different jobs. From working in charity shops, through to habitat improvement projects for fish, there are a number of ways all of us can do our bit. The website http://www.volunteering.org.uk/ is packed with contact details for charities and details of how you can volunteer.
Declutter Clutter isn’t just unsightly – it actually stops us from getting the best from our lives in many ways. We hoard so much unnecessary junk, which could either be donated to charity or recycled, freeing up space and leaving us feeling much less stressed. If you have to wade through lots of unwanted items to find the thing you’re looking for, you end up feeling frustrated and irritated.
Healthy eating This one tops the resolution charts each year, but is also one of the ones that is most broken. Eating healthily should be enjoyable rather than a chore. Agalinks.com – Aga’s online magazine – has a huge recipe database of delicious and nutritious dishes, to make it a little easier to become inspired.
Walk more Walking, rather than driving, is good for the environment and good for you too. Walking recreationally is a great way to stay in shape and explore some of Britain’s beautiful countryside, but walking rather than taking the car is something we could all do a little bit more of. The dogs will be grateful.
